THANK YOU MUM***

By Author- Alisha Prien

Today I went to two Mother’s Day school events, and they were two very different experiences. My son Spencer’s was exciting, fun, and full of pure innocent joy. The children at Spencer’s school all have some sort of disability, physical and intellectual. As you can imagine this school’s assembly can be quite loud, and disruptive, but I love it. I Love watching how the older grade cheers on their peers as they step on stage, facing their fears of speaking. For some of these kids it’s a massive achievement to even be able to rehearse and remember a mere sentence. It’s hard to describe in detail the feeling, you would have to be there to witness such Joy. My other children’s school is a mere speck in comparison. When it comes to their assembly, the children look bored out of their minds, sitting in a church and eagerly waiting for the torture to end, so do the parents. A bit of perspective really on small things that may bore some, indeed bring joy to others.

Today both schools celebrated Mother’s Day, a day in which we show gratitude to all mothers, stepmothers and caregivers out there. It got me thinking how lucky we are to have such amazing people in our life to provide that nurturing maternal love. So many of us are lucky to have our mother’s still here, many have lost theirs, and others even lost touch. I for one wouldn’t be here without my mum, she truly is an inspiration to me, one of the strongest women I know. As a mum myself I now understand the sacrifices many mothers make, the wish to never see their children hurt and the constant want to give our children a never-ending flow of love. I feel a great sense of honour to be Meelah, Elijah and Spencer’s mother. It is a gift, and a most rewarding and fulfilling purpose to be a mum. Many of us may feel at times we are not enough, or we are not doing enough, but I promise in the eyes of our children we are, and they will love us no matter what.

Whether it be a mother, or strong female character in your life who has shown you such nurturing warmth, be sure to remind them they are loved and that you are grateful. You never know how long they will be here or how long you have with them, so spend time and make the most of it <3
